In China, it is regarded as a “Herb of Immortality” due to its many health giving qualities and anti-ageing effects and it is praised for its illness-prevention and therapeutic qualities. The cuttings usually sprout roots after a couple of weeks if the bottom quarter of the cutting is submersed and left standing in clean water. Once the roots are over 1 cm long the cuttings can be planted in nutrient-rich, well-drained soil, in part shade. Water occasionally. Refrain from harvesting until the plant is at least 30 – 50cm tall. The plant grows well in the New Zealand climate but requires protection from heavy frosts.
